Wanganui Wins The Banner

QUADRANGULAR TOURNEY

The primary schools Rugby football tournament, in which teams from the Wungamii, Wairarapa, Hutt Valley, and Wellington districts have been competing, terminated in W’anganui taking the banner by beating 'Wellington at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon by .8 points to 5, thus scoring their third win in the tournament. In the other match yesterday, Hutt Valley beat Wairarapa by 12 points to 3. Weather conditions were ideal, and the dry ground and ball made for. fast play, the lads lasting out the 30-minute spells with resolution. Hutt Valley’s Convincing Win.

Hutt Valley proved much too good for Wairarapa in the match which started, at 2 p.m. Tlte Hutt forwards kept going tirelessly, and were well supported by a safe rearguard.

The teams were: — Wairarapa: Sim; Hcnii, Bannister, Hodgetts; Fly, Josephs; Butler; Capes, Ward, Richardson, McPhee, O’Shea, Wilmshurst, Olliver, Wall. Hutt Valley: Fenn; Daley, Grindle, McKissick; Shermack, Jones; Kandell; McLennan, Brailey, Bohanna, Lyrer, Rogers, Cameron. Searle, Ileberley. From the opening whistle Hutt Valley infused dash into their play, and rushed the leather to the Wairarapa line, where Cameron went over for a try, which Lyrer failed to convert. Playing well together, Wairarapa took play to the Hutt Valley line, where Fly evened the scores with a penalty goal. Hutt Valley, with the forwards going well, again worked play to the Wairarapa line, where Brailey went over for a try near the posts. Lyrer failed to convert from almost‘in front of the posts. With breeze and sun behind them, Hutt Valley started off with dash in the second spell. A passing rush saw Fenn, the Hutt Valley full-back, come tip to make an overlap, and he scored a good try, which was not converted. Keeping nip the pressure, Hutt Valley increased their score when Heberley crossed the line. Lyrer was again unable to add the extra points, and Valley thus scored a decisive victory by 12 points to 3. Fenn, full-back, and Randall, halfback, played outstanding games for Hutt Valley, but Ward was the only player on the Wairarapa side to reproduce the form the team showed on Monday. Mr. W. L. Monkhouse was the referee. Another Win for Wanganui. Wanganui scored their third win of the tournament by beating Wellington in the match which commenced fit 3 o’clock by 8 points to 5. The teams were:— Wanganui: Pratt; Noema. Haddon, Goldthorpo; Price, Head; Webby; Stewart Dallison, Read, O'Connor, Labbadge, Bradley, Tauri, Glent.worlh. Wellington: Ayres; Poole, Page, R. Carr; Gardiner, Churchward; Harris; Dimock, Williams, McLaughlin, McCrea, Lindsay, Wilton, McLean, O’Sullivan. Wanganui gained the load when Webby put over a great penalty goal from well out. A little later Ayres had a groat opportunity to even the scores with . a penalty kick, but failed. The Wellington backs shaped well, but. Page upset combination several times by trying to do too much himself. Early in the second spell, Wilson followed up a long kick, and was awarded a try, which Ayres converted, putting Wellington two points in the lead. W'angantii now combined bettor, and. after battering a|: the Wellington line for some time. Tauri scored a resolute try. which Webby converted. There was tio further score, and Wanganui thus won a closely-contested match by 8 points to ’ Mr. W. L. Monkhouse was the referee. Presentation of Banner. At. the conclusion of the tournament, players and spectators assembled in front of the grandstand, whore Mr. C. F. Rockol, chairman of the management committee of the Wellington Primary Schools Rugby Union, presented the banner to Price, captain of file Wanganui team, and congratulated him on its victory. Ward, manager of the Wanganui team, thanked the people of e.llinglon for billeting the visiting players and entertaining them so hospitably. The 1940 tournament. he said, would linger long in Ihe memory of the boys who had taken part in it.
