Since the Government took office in 1935 the Labour member for Hamilton has been associated with Parliamentary committees dealing with industries and industrial development. “Immediately after the outbreak of war he was appointed a co-opted member of the special committee set up by tlie Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan. The committee’s activities have covered a wide field of organization and industrial research, necessitating almost continuous attendance in Wellington. This work has included the provision of additional refrigeration space and machinery, investigation of the projected development of a New Zealand 'iron and steel industry, utilizing deposits of ore at Onekaka, the dismantling of the stranded steamer Port Bowen at Wanganui and the use of its machinery and material in State departmental services. Mr. Barrell’s knowledge and experience will be of great value to the Auckland Harbour Board.”
