Commenting on the subject of canteens in Territorial camps, “P. 8. writes: “Beer is a healthful drink conducive to contentment of mind and good fellowship, .but like all other good things in life its use can be abused. If I had a boy of IS or 19 going into a Territorial camp I would much prefer to know that he could have a glass of beer when he wanted it under conditions of discipline and in the company of other self-respecting young men. That to my mind is much to be. preferred to a system of complete prohibition, which more than anything else leads to intemperance and adds to that evil the w-orse evils of deceit and disrespect for the law.” Contending that soldiers stationed at local forts are entitled to' the same privileges as men on active service, “Mother of Two 'Serving” considers that the home service men are not receiving fair treatment in regard to leave and travelling allowances. She adds: “These boys gave up good positions and good money to do what they considered was their real duty.” “It seems to me that there is only two ways to prevent war,” writes “Father of 6,” “first, by educating the common peoples of the world to refuse to participate in war that is a curse to civilization, and to inform the heads of nations who want war that they must do their own fighting; secondly, to prepare for war in such a way that the strength of men, arms amd materials will avoid conflict. Why call on the United States of America for co-opera-tion? If Mr. Roosevelt had used his power in the first place, and told Hitler before the invasion of Poland that America was behind Britain and her Allies to the limit of her resources there would have been no war and all this and further destruction and miserwould have been avoided.”
