Wellington Competition Won By St. George
MATCHES ON SATURDAY By beating Eastern Suburbs on Saturday afternoon St, George made certain their claim on the Wellington Rugby League championship. Miramar, who beat Central earlier in the day, are runners up, one point, behind St. George. In a game which could not affect the competition Handwiek beat Newtown. Next Saturday a special competition of one round will begin. . St. George 19, Eastern Suburbs 9. Central 7. Randw’ick 25, Newtown Reserve Grade. I’etone 13, Handwiek 15. Miramar Beat Central.
Before Miramar played Central at Newtown i’ark early on Saturday afternoon the position was that it Jlirauiar lost to Central they would have no hope of winning the championship, winch would be St. Georges, but it Miramar beat Central then St. George had to obtain a win in their game with Eastern Suburbs to make the title secure lor themselves. -Miramar did beat Central, and St. George later beat Eastern bubU 1 Combination among the Miramar bucks was the deciding factor in their victory. For them tries were scored 'by A. Elworthy, J. Neilson, C. Vi'oud. Scott and Carruthers, and Askew kicked three goals from tries and one from a penalty. Jamieson scored a try tor Central. He converted it himself and also kicked a penalty goal. Referee: Mr. W. E. Simpson. St. George Beat Eastern Suburbs.
AVheu St. George played Eastern Suburbs the team at the top of the table met the team at the bottom, and the comparatively inexperienced Eastern Suburbs players increased their reputation bv making the showing they did against St. George. It was a bright open game with no dull moments and the result by no means certain till the last few minutes, when St. George clapped on a couple ol converted tries. Eastern Suburbs tactics were to smother tlie St. George movements at their beginnings, but once St. George got into motion their backs were clever enough to elude Eastern Sumtrbs resolute tackling. For St. George Eadie, who was playing his last game before taking up military duties and who was chaired from the field bv his teammates, scored two tries, ami ‘Barrow, Bailey and O'Connor one each. Farrell converted two. For Eastern Suburbs King scored a try, which Dooley converted, besides kicking two penalty goals. At the conclusion of the game Mr. Will Appleton, patron of the Central Club, last year's champions, and vicepresident of the league, presented the shield which he has given lor the club championship, to 0 Connor, the bt.
