WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Surprise By Hutt United
T.O.G.’s FIRST DEFEAT
Though the weather was fine on Saturday for the AVellington women’s, hockey championship competitions, at Newtown I’ark, where the senior 21 games were played, the grounds were inclined to be bumpy. The day’s surprise, was the defeat of Technical Old Girls by United in a scrappy game. It was Technical's first loss ot the season. An uiiiortunute incident which is likely to bring a protest from Technical occurred in the match. It is alleged that lull-time was played in the first spell and ten minutes short in the second, and that time was not deducted for two accidents, which lost at least another five minutes. As a result of this match Technical are now leading Hutt United by one point. College Old Girls won 8-0 from Training College, who played one short, -Lhe Hutt Valley team attended at the Kilbirnie ground, but the Ngati-l’oneke team did not appear, Hutt Valley winning by default. At the conclusion of the matches the representative team to compete at the Dominion tournament , in Auckland wus given a practice against a rest side. United 3, T.O.G. 2—The game was not up to the standard of the two leading teams of the competition, which to some extent might have been caused , by the bumpy ground. Technical Old Girls gave one of their poorest exhibitions this season. United certainly performed a littie belter, but they also have been seen to much better advantage. United were quick to open the scoring, .Miss T. Monk, centre half, netting from a scramble. .Mis. McGaskin followed this up with a further goal and Technical were two down in Hie iirst quarter of the match. A splendid rally, led by Miss J. Lark, right wing, en ab'led Miss J. Mack, inside left, to net lor 'Technical. Shortly before the spell Miss Mack again goaled, the half-time score being 2-all United forced the play till Mrs. Leggatt netted. The Technical goalkeeper, Mrs. r. Handley, misunderstood the position; it was a simple shot which might easily have been cleared had the misunderstanding not occurred. Technical made some promising attacking movements, but always seemed to fail approaching the United defence. Uniled might have scored again had Miss B. Strang, left wing, not been too anxious in her shooting. The teams played approximately a quarter of an hour short and Technical are likely to protest against this and request a replay. C.O.G. 8, Training College 0. —On No. 2 ground at Newtown Park Training College shaped poorly against College Obi Girls. But for .spasmodic breakaways the students failed to play the hockey of which they are capable. College Old Giris led by 3-0 at the interval. Scorers were ■Mrs. I. Lainasoti (3), Misses J. Carson (3), J. Riley ami J. Hatcher. Senior is. —St. Joseph's 2 (Misses K. O’Brien, K. Dewars), Y.W.C.A. 1; C.O.G. 11 (.Misses I’. Rote 5, B. Stewart 2, C. Baker 2, J. AlcC'arlie, M. Brook). Varsity 0: Upper Hutt 8. Training College (three .short") 2. Junior. —Technical College A 0, St. Joseph's (two .short) 2; Hutt United won by default from Hutt Valley. Intermediate.—tMaranui 2, Technical B 0 C.O.G. Reunion. The College Old Girls Hoekey Club, one of the oldest women's hockey clubs in AVellington, for the first lime in its history, will hold a reunion in the 'Tararun Tramping Club's rooms on August 11). The club secretary, .Miss J. Yeatman (phone 4.7-53 J), would be pleased to hear from past members of the club. BOER WAR VETERANS The annual meeting of the Wellington South African War Veterans' Association will be held in the association's rooms, 125 Lambton Quay, on Thursday night. Comrades’ attack from the start, and with Traynor ami Calder keeping the Comrades’ wings in check, he was able to counter movements quickly and set his wings running. It. Ward, who .scored bidli Waterside's goals, was lite outstanding figure in the forward line. Ihe inside and wingmen functioned nicely, but it was Ward's aggressiveness that had the Comrades' defence nonplussed. Longbottom gave his usual sound display, being most useful as a constructive forward, while the wing men. Walker and .Innes, did the best, for their side by crossing the ball instead of relying on individual efforts. Comrades were beaten on their merits; nevertheless, they offered stern resistance. The forwards did not function as well as usual, probably because of the stout opposition of tlie Wellington team, but the backs gave a good display. Riggans, the Auckland repi't senlat ive full back, gave an excellent exhibition, while most initiative was shown in the forwards by M. Francis.
