Heavy Increase In Exports

The principal feature of the overseas trade returns for the mouth of June is tlie huge increase in exports when compared with previous Junes and also with May of this’ year. Exports for June showed an excess over imports ol £4,595,000. For May there uw an excess of imports over exports of £534,000. For the 12 months of the production year ended June 30, 1940, exports' reached the very high level of £65,859,000, or £7,968.000 higher than for the year ended June 30, 1939, while the visible favourable trade balance amounted Io £19.789,000, compared with £1.391,000 for the year ended Juno 30. 1.939. Imports for the year ended June 30, showed a decrease of £10,430,000 compared with the preceding year. Exports during June were valued at £9,49-1,000, compared with £5.015,000 for the month of May, an increase of £4,479,000. Compared with those for June, 1939, exports show an increase of £4.349,000.

Imports'during June, according to the returns issued on Saturday by the Customs Department, were valued at £4,899.000. compared with £5,549,000 for May, a decrease of £050,000. Compared with June, 1939, there is a decrease of £298,000. Following is a comparison of the exports and'imports for June in the last three years:—

For the first six months of this year to June 30, exports were valued at £44,632,000, compared with £36,522,000 for the corresponding period of 1939, an increase of £7,810,000. Imports for the same period totalled £24,870.000, compared with £28,187,000 for the first six months of 1939, a decrease of £3,317,000. The excess of exports for the first six months of this year amounted to £19,762,000, compared with £8.635,000 for the same period of 1939, an increase of £11,127,000. Export and import values for the six months of the last three years compare as follows: —

For the 12 months of the production year ended June 30, 1910, exports show a substantial increase of £7,968,000 over the previous year, the figures being £65,859,000 and £57,891,000 respectively. Imports for the same period amounted to £46,070,000, compared with £56,500,000 lor the preceding year, a decrease of £10,430,000. The excess of exports totalled £.19,789,000, compared with £1,391,000 for the year ended June 30, .1939, an increase of £15,395,000.
