Appointment Of Director
Mr. J. S. Hunter has been appointed Director of National Service. The appointment was. announced last night by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser. Mr. Hunter has been Director of Manpower up to the preseiit. Mr. Hunter' was born at Picton 51 years ago, and was educated at the Hawera District High School. He joined the Post and Telegraph Department as a message boy in 1903 and became a cadet four years later. In 1914 he joined the Public Service_ Commissioner's office, and from 1915 tc 1924 he was a ministerial private secretary, serving with Sir Francis Bell, Rt Hon. W. F. Massey, Hon. A. Myers, Hon. D. 11. Guthrie, and Hon. J. G. Coates. He then joined the Railways Department. In 1926, he attended the Imperial Conference and the Assembly of _ the League of Nations. He was appointed assistant to the General Manager of Railways in 1928, being transferred the following year to become the first commissioner for transport. Laterjie was appointed Commissioner of Employment, and when the Social Security Act came into operation he became director of the registration branch. .
