NAZI OCCUPATION NOT EASY
Difficult Prospect In France (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 17. The effect of a pronouncement of such magnitude and gravity as that made by Marshal Petain cannot immediately be assessed. Official quarters in London point out that clearly it must not be expected that France will tie very largely overrun by the enemy. Quite apart from the question of obligation io their allies, there is no reason whatever to think that the French will show themselves less spirited than the Poles, the Czechs, the Norwegians, the Dutch, and the Belgians, who, though their countries have been subjected to. Nazi tyranny, are yet continuing their resistance, both passive and active, both at home and from overseas, thus making the exploitation of their countries by the Germans more and more difficult. Countries may be over-run by tanks, but they cannot be governed by tanks. The French Have shown throughout their history that I hey do not easily submit to the invader. The task of holding down French would provide, a problem of no moan order for the Germans. Moreover, it sometimes happens that, Hie more spectacular an advance of tliis nature, the more spectacular is the collapse which often follows it. As was stated yesterday evening, the British Umpire is resolute in its determination to continue the struggle.
