RELAY RACE

Christchurch-Akaroa

CENTENNIAL EVENT

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, May 19.

Exceeding all expectations, the entry for the centennial relay race from Christchurch to Akaroa totals 43 teams of eight, making a field of 344 runners. This is the biggest field entered for a race of this kind in New Zealand. It is the principal South Island sporting event on the official centennial programme, and will be held on June 1 in King’s Birthday holiday weekend. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, will start the runners, who will cover the journey of 48 miles in eight stages. Teams are entered from Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Greymouth, Temuka, Timaru and Dunedin, as well as 24 from Christchurch clubs. Wellington alone will send eight teams. The runners will carry centennial greetings to the people of Akaroa.
