DOMINION CHAMPION BEATEN

Amateur Boxing Tournament WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION OPENS SEASON The defeat of the New Zealand lightweight champion, Tommy-Dunn (Lower Hutt) by E. Underwood ('Auckland), provided the surprise of the night when the 'Wellington Boxing Association opened its 1940 season with an all-amateur tournament in the Town Hall last night. The association began the season auspiciously. The matching had been done judiciously, and that the good-sized audience were pleased with the entertainment. was clear from the applause which followed most of the bouts. The main bout was of six two-minute rounds between Dunn (9.13) and Underwood (9.41). The Dominion champion had the advantage of weight, height and reach, and it was generally thought that he would have too much experience tor the Auckland man. Underwood, however, showed that he could box hy putting Dunn on the canvaJ with a right rip to the body as soon as they shaped up. , . Boxing coolly, Underwood showed clever footwork and brought a heavilyloaded right into play, as well as employing a lance-like left, to the face with telling effect. He was particularly smart, at counter-punching, and brought over his gloves, with a snap. Dunn took the aggressive in the second round, but Underwood was only too willing to trade punches, and he had the advantage of the exchanges throughout. They warmed to their work in the last two rounds, but Underwood maintained his advantage and won a clear-cut victory. Though the result, came as a surprise, the Auckland man was given an ovgtiou for his clever and spirited display.

Other Bouts. K. Robertson (Newtown), 9st. 121 b., outpointed T. .Gilmore (Tracy’s), 9st. 21b., in a willing lightweight bout. The winner owed his victory to the use oi a good straight left.
