Saving For Victory
Sir, —-The events of lhe last few days have no doubt awakened even the most casual of us to the real nature of tlie struggle in which Britain and her Allies find themselves. Surely every man and woman in our fair land now realizes that we must all do our best to help in smashing tlie savage Nazi monster. May I make some suggestions as to how our country may best help? Extending the idea so ably put before the people iu an editorial in this paper just recently that tlie people of New Zealand must be willing to live more frugally that our strength to fight may be increased, I would suggest that all incomes which exceed £350 per annum should be reduced by special taxation to that sum. This would provide many thousands of pounds per annum for expenses connected with our war effort and would decrease tlie amount of unnecessary expenditure in the country by the same sum. This might, in fact, ultimately would, cause a slight drop in employment, but the recruiting campaign- would more than make up for this. My reason for giving tlie above figure is the fact that in New Zealand at. present the average family requires approximately that amount in order to maintain itself in a state of physical fitness. The present methods of raising funds take no cognisance of the fact that if poor people go without necessary foodstuffs they are indirectly harming our war effort. During the war no man should have more than lie needs to keep him fit and feed his family properly.—l am, etc., CITIZEN. Wellington, May 12.
