LOCOMOTIVE FAILURE
Wairarapa Passengers Travel By Road
Because of'tin engine .failure on the Rimutaka incline late yesterday afternoon, passengers by the Woodville train, scheduled to reach Wellington at 5.44 p.m., were transhipped to a lleet oif buses at Featherston, and brought to Wellington by road. Extra cars were added to the' train at Woodville, and because of the trouble with a bridge south of Longburn, the Napier-Wellington express did not proceed beyond Woodville. Ibis decision was made to relieve the Manawatu line of as much traffic as possible while repairs to the damaged bridge wore being conupleted. Passengers from Hawke's Bay joined the Wairarapa train at Woodville, but were unable to complete the journey to Wellington by rail because of the breakdown on the incline. Several buses which loft Featherston between 7.35 and S p.m.. brought, them to Wellington. It: was spited last night that traffic had been restored to normal on the Manawatu line, though speed restrictions applied on the bridge damaged by a tractor on Sunday morning. Up to late yesterday afternoon carriages were propelled across the structure, but locomotives were subsequently permitted to cross.
