A FINE DISPLAY OF MATCFAFT

McCready Beats Corbett By One Fall

SCIENTIFIC ORTHODOX

WRESTLING

Fitter and more formidable than over, the wrestler, Karl McCready beat a elever and active opponent in Joe Corbett by a single fall in his opening bout at the Town Hall, Wellington, last night. McCready obtained his fall io the sixth round, when he ducked a flying tackle and sent Corbett crashing to the mat, to be pinned easily. Corbett, with repeated attempts to trap McCready in Lis specially hold, a Japanese keylock, kept the bout lively to the end. McCready, who appeared in excellent trim, received a warm ovation from bis many supporters. He weighed list. 21b., and Corbett 16st. 101 b. The referee was Mr. A. Jenkins.

Clean, straightforward matcraft characterized the bout. In spite of a complete absence of roughhouse tactics. ■ it held moot of the audience tensely attentive throughout. Corbett s speed and extensive repertoire of holds offset McCready’s advantages of weight and strength. Several times in the early stages Corbett bad McCready in difficulties. A Breach ol Etiquette. A flue display of mat science was abruptly interrupted in the fourth rouud when Corbett broke a hold with the first elbow-jolt seen at that, stage of the boutMcCready evidently regarded it as a breach of etiquette, for he rushed Corbett into a corner and belaboured him with forearm blows. Corbett repeated his gambit a little later, and when McCreadv rushed at. him huug on the ropes and kicked out at McCready with both feet. Halfway through the sixth rouud Corbett, slung against the ropes, came oil them in a vigorous aud well-timed flying tackle. His shoulder drove into McCreadv’s midriff and sent him to the mat, ‘As he got up, Corbett launched a second tackle. McCready stooped quickly, and Corbett went flying over his shoulders, to crash heavily. McCready leapt on him and held his shoulders- to the mat. Japanese Keylock. la the Seventh round Corbett succeeded in applying his Japanese keylock, a veryeffective hold which had McCready worried. McCready sat up, and tried to make Corbett break the bold, out could not, and flopped back gasping, grimacing, and beating the mat with his _ lists. The referee stooped over him solicitously, but McCready would not submit. He lay writhing, with perspiration streaming from his face. Corbett increased the pressure, and it seemed that McCready must inevitably yield a fall —tyhe* l bell rang. The last rouud provided an exact repetition ; Corbett re-established his grip, but again McCready fought against submission till the bell brought the bout to an end, leaving him winner by a fall. It was an excellent and interesting match,-the more impressive for lhe absence of rough wrestling, and for the excellent exhibition put up by both protagonists. Professional Preliminary. Light-heavyweight: Colin Croskery (list. 61b.) beat Fat MeCashin (list, •lib.), on points, one fall each. Croskery took a fall within 25 seconds of the bout opening; he drop-kicked MeCashin and dumped him before pinning him. McCaslin) drew even with a headlock and grapevine in the third.
