OTAKI FORM

Some Promising Efforts

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Lustral Not Going North

(By

The Watcher.)

Quadroon ran a good race for a fresh horse at Otaki and just missed the money. He appreciated the soft going and as these conditions will prevail from now on he should not be long in running more prominently if he remains sound. He showed slight signs of lameness after Saturday’s race. Du Maurier Forward, Du Maurier bears a much mor e solid appearance now, and though he won unexpectedly on Saturday it is an indication that he is ready for more important races. Du Maurier is a winner over hurdles, and he should be a good prospect for one of the leading races a little later on. Ran Well. Master Cyklon, who is now trained by J. M. Cameron, began slowly in his race at Otaki on Saturday, but he had made up a lot of ground at the end and it was a promising effort for a fresh horse. Tidewaiter. Tidewaiter was probably unlucky not to win on Saturday. He is showing improving form and must be a Cornwall Handicap possibility. Jumped Well. Chat had nothing to beat on Saturday, but she jumped well and as she showed promise when put to hurdling earlier m her career she should win a good jumping race thife winter. She can run in heavy ground and will stay all day. A Natural Jumper.

Like most of the Hunting Songs El Meynell has a natural aptitude for jumping, but he has been well schooled, his first lesson being given with trainer H. Dulieu himself in the saddle. El Meynell is a good flat galloper, and as he jumps so well he should make good in his new sphere. Lustral Still Sore. When Lustral hit a fence during the running of the Waverley Steeplechase he jarred himself more seriously than was apparent at the time, and he will not fulfil any of his northern engagements. May Race at Manawatu. Kaiwaka and Tidewaiter have accepted for Waikato on Saturday and they are also in the fields at Manawatu, It is likely that they will race at Manawatu as a preliminary to the Great Northern meeting. Luck. A punter at Otaki on Saturday had made up his mind to put a tenner on Young Charles. On getting the tickets he happened to glance at the card and found that'he had backed the right number, Ko. 1, but in the sixth race, whereas Young Charles was No. 1 in the seventh. There was nothing he could do about it so he sat and watched No. 1, Parlato, come home for him and then, put it all up on Young Charles. No Change.

The three leading horsemen, W. J. Broughton, B. H. Morris, and H N. Wiggins, were all at Otaki on Saturday, and each rode a winner, so that there is no change in their respective positions on the ladder. Broughton's taliy now is 47, Morris 44, and Wiggins 42. W. J. Mudford has 37, P. Atkins 34, P. Spratt 34, and G. R. Tattersail 30. Marton’s Y'ear.

A substantial profit on each of the two meetings held during the past season was reported to the annual meeting of the Marton Jockey Club by the president, Mr. H. J. McManaway. The club’s linanccs, he said, were still improving, and were in a satisfactory position. Sixteen new members had been elected during the year, and the membership now stood at 323. The racecourse grounds and appointments had been kept in good condition, and the farm and course committee had devoted a considerable amount of time to improving the farm revenue, as the balance-sheet showed. He-thanked the committee and sub-committees and the honorary officials for the .splendid work they had carried out during the year. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Dr. S. Skerman; president, Mr. H J. D. McManaway; vice-presidents, Messrs. Jas. Bull, F. R. H. Brice, and J. R L. Stanford; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. Brice; stewards aud committee, Messrs. S. R. Hammond, L. Hammond, R. W. Marshall, W. R. Duncan, and H. T. Whale; hon. timekeeper. Mr. D. Thompson ; clerk of scales, Mr. D. . Stevens; clerk of course, Mr. A. Goodwin; hon. surgeons, Drs. J. R. Macneill, Hay and Sinclair. Messrs. H. Coyle and E. V. Wilson were appointed handicappers and Mr. A. Vincent starter. Out of Hospital.

The rider F. Fergus, who was injured when Sigurd fell with him while contesting the hurdle race at Pukekohe, has been discharged from hospital. He expects to be able to ride at the Waikato meeting on Saturday and Monday next. Santoft.

Santoft haa been out with the hounds, but there is not much chance that he will stand up to a preparation for racing. Temporary Shift. As T. R. George has a large number of rising two-year-olds in the stable, ho may temporarily transfer his active team to Opaki and return to Trentham when the tracks are firmer. He will shortly receive an additional yearling from Hastings in the filly by Bulandshar from Hest, which is owned in Wellington. Looks Well.

Bridegroom, who made a good start as a steeplechaser, resumed racing at Otaki with a run on the fiat. Bridegroom is looking in good order for future racing.

Valiineen Withdrawn. Valimeen was withdrawn from her engagements at the Auckland winter meeting at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Expensive. The small section of railway line from Sockburn to the Riccartou racecourse cost the Canterbury Jockey Club £2247/19/4 in maintenance last year. Good Fields at Manawatu.

Excellent acceptances were received for the first day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting, which will be held on Thursday and Saturday. _ The average is 15 per race. There are 26 in the Rangitano Plate, but it is unlikely that a division will be necessary. Dictate Reappears.

Dictate, who has been with Ebb Simpson at Trentham since he was injured at the Wellington summer meeting, bad a race at Otaki. He was not dangerous, but was running on, and finished fifth. Answers to Correspondents.
