TROUT FISHING
' Rotorua And Taupo ANGLERS DISAPPOINTED WITH RESULTS Dominion Special Service. ROTORUA, May 3. The trout fishing season in the Rotorua and Taupo districts closes on May 15 and on the whole anglers have been very disappointed with their sport up to the present. There-seems to.be an abundance of feed everywhere, but tne fish are very difficult to catch. Those that have been caught in the main are in better condition than for years past, and this improvement should be maintained till the trout again overtake the food supplies. The Tongariro River is the most popular of all the streams, but there are now so many anglers that it is always difficult to find a good position iu the favourite pool. The most successful anglers are those using large rods that enable them to reach the fish lying in the shade on the far bank. Very skilful fishermen occasionally secure some fine catches of six or seven fish, but the average man has to be content with one or two fish for a day’s work. Trout are now running up the Waitahanui River at Taupp, but here the same trouble arises—too many rods for the amount of water opened up. Complaints are widespread-about the poor sport that is obtained for the money spent. Lake Tarawera is providing big fish, but these are few and far between. The Lake Rotoiti fish have been consistently good in quality, but, as usual, they are very difficult to secure. Fish in Rotorua have been fairly plentiful, but ou the average rather smaller than elsewhere.
