BOYS’ ACTIVITIES

Wellington Y.M.C.A. During the schools’ vacation, which covers the next two weeks, the Wellington Y.M.C.A. will conduct an extensive programme, providing for very many interests of the boys of Wellington. As in former years, the activities arranged will be open to all Wellington boys aged 10 years and over, and will not be confined to members of the Y.M.C.A. On Monday, May 0, boys interested in stamp collecting will meet at the. Y.M.C.A. for an address by Mr. Philpott Crowther, followed by a period of exchanges. This~occaslon is arranged in recognition of the fact that the first postage stamp, English penny black, was isued on May 0, 1840. In the afternoon boys over 12 will visit a leading boot factory. On Tuesday the programme of educational sound films will be screened in the Y.M.C.A. boys’ department; in addition. a party of .boys from the Hutt Valley YjM.C.A., after visiting an industrial firm, will compete with Wellington boys in gymnastic competitions. Similar features have been arranged for the remainder of next week, including' a whole day tramp for the Friday. A prominent feature of the programme for the.second week will be a kite-flying contest, in which boys of various aged classes will compete to see who has the best flown home-made kite, best flown bought kite, and the most humorous kite. This contest will be held on Monday morning, May 13, at Hataitai Park. In addition there will be an afternoon given to a mouth organ competition in the association's gymnasium, both for members and non-memlbeirs; and ' further visits to centres of industrial interest. Several of the association's suburban club groups will have their official opening 'during the (schools vacation period.
