Trade Unions And Production
Sir, —The Prime Minister and the Minister of Labour have quite rightly called for increased production of meat, dairy produce, and wool in order to assist Britain in this war. In spite of this we see in your issue of April 26 that the Labour Department'has prosecuted a farmer for employing nonunion labour for shearing, when no unionists were available. The Labour Department argues that the shearing must bo postponed till unionists are available, which is in direct opposition to the Minister of Labour, who called for special efforts in production. In Britain many trade unions in key industries have suspended certain restrictions in order “to get on with the job.” What a contrast to the Labour Department’s action in the above case 1 —We are, etc., N.Z.
