Waterside And Petone Beaten SWIFTS’ GOOD FINISH Marist Win By One Goai From Hospital The opening of the Soccer season in Wellington on Saturday was marked by two major surprises, Waterside, holders of the Chatham Gup, being 'beaten by Swifts and Petone. holders of the first A division championship, going down to Institute Old Boys, who were promoted from the first B division. Marist beat Hospital by the odd goal in five and -Seirtoun proved too Istrong for Technical Old Boys. Results were: ■> Swifts -1, Waterside 3. Institute Old Boys 2, Petone 1. After leading by two goals to nil at half-time, Waterside failed to withstand a determined second-half challenge by Swifts, who scored a last-minute win by 4 goals to 3. Waterside impressed as the more solid combination in the firsthalf. They were faster on the ball and the better positional play of their forwards made their attacks more dangerous. R. Ward aud W 7 alker scored Waterside’s first two goals, but Longbottom in both cases made the openings. In spite of solid defence by Hazel, Calder and Harris, the Swifts’ forwards combined well in the second spell and after 22 minutes Shankie headed a good goal and scored again a few minutes later to put the teams level. A penalty against Waterside was taken by Baker, who scored, but Waterside immediately gained a penalty and Longbottom scored. Swifts’ supporters would have been quite pleased with a draw, but right on time Baker scored for Swifts to give his side a narrow win. The teams were: Swifts. —Tonks; Salisbury-, Olliver; A. Yeoman cleared and C Yeoman slipped the ball to the leftwing, Arki-nsta-11, who scored with a low shot. Technical held- the advantage for the next 15 minutes, but -Boyes was playing well at centre-half, and the Seatoun defence was sound. Backed u.p by the winig'-lialves, Seymour and Jacobsen, the Technical forwards were often dangerous, but half-time came without further score. Edmunds put Seatoun . further ahead early iu the second half with a neat goal. Technical had a chance with a penalty, but the goalkeeper saved. Another goal by (Eclinvuiyds 'Seatoun and by A.
