Hard Fought Draw
Though play in the ’Wellington College Old Boys-Petone encounter was inclined, to be ragged, both sides impressed with their keenness and the score, G-G, was a good indication of the merits of both sides.
Petone made the pace early in the game Ryan, live-eighths, who played consistently well, was associated with R. Fairburn, in a brilliant move which culminated in I’etone’s first try. Ryan cut through near the halfway line and passed to Fairb.urn, who made a smart sprint and scored between the posts. Salisbury, hooking for Petone. did good work in the first spell, but the advantage gained was often spoilt by the backs being too eager. Aston (Petone) was. conspicuous at the back of the scrum, and another forward who took the eye was McCarthy. Petone had the territorial advantage in the first spell and harassed Old Boys continuously. Good following up culminated in Petone’s second try, 30 minutes after the start, and at half-time the home side was leading 6-0. Old Boys backs and forwards, playing with better combination, smartened up considerably after the change over. Alexander, at full-back, and Pocknell helped their side considerably with accurate and well placed line-kicking. At centre threequarter Pocknell was very sound. Wright secured Old Boys’ first try after using evasive tactics and running through strong opposition. Later Alexander crossed the line to score Ohl second try. Old Boys began using their backs to advantage and both sides plajed brighter and better football, but no further scores resulted. Referee: Mr. A. R. Monee.
