MURDER AND MALICE

“Death Starts a Rumour,” by Mary Fi tt (Lon'don: Nicholson and 'Watson). This author has already written several mystery stories which have commanded popular support, her style being entirely different from the thriller type of novel dependent upon ceaseless action, plot and counter-plot. In her latest production she weaves an unusually interesting story around a house-party given by Mrs. le Planter, an entirely disagreeable old woman who almost merits her unpleasant end. Her considerable fortune falls to her nephew, Michael, and proves anything but an undisguised blessing. In the absence of any solution, rumour wags its vicious tongue to the extreme discomforture of Michael and other interested parties. As a last resort, years later, the original guests are reassembled in the same large mansion, and, after a second murder, the tangled affairs of the group are unravelled, and the criminal revealed. This is an unusual plot, skilfully developed with excellent, character sketching of both pleasant and unpleasant people.
