OBITUARY
Rt. Hon. H. A. L. Fisher NOTED HISTORIAN LONDON, April 18. The death has occurred of the historian the Rt. Hon. 11. A. L. Fisher. The Rt. Hon. Herbert Albert Laurens Fisher was born in Loudon in 1865 and educated at Winchester and at New College, Oxford (where in 18SS he was elected to a fellowship). Paris and Gottingen. In 1911-12 lie was Chichele lecturer in modern history at Oxford and in 1916 he was elected to the House of ('ominous by the Hallam Division of Sheffield. He had previously been a member of fhe Royal Commission on tlie Indian civil service and from 1912 was vice-cliam-ellor of Shellield University. In 1916 he was Minister of Education in Mr. Lloyij George's Cabinet. In 1918 lie was elected to Farli.-nnent representing English Universities. He had held a number of posts, including that of delegate to the League of Nations Assembly, and since 1925 bad been warden of New College. Oxford. He won wide fame as a historian, his various books on Napoleon Bonaparte, studies in history and politics, contributions to tlie "Cambridge Modern History.” life of Lord Bryce, and, finally, bis "History of Europe." beii>2 especially well known. He received the Order of Merit in 1937 and was ele'-ted a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1920. In 1928-32 lie was president of the Britis Academy, and from 1935 to 1939 a governor of tlie 8.8. C. Ho was also formerly a trustee of the British Museum.
Mr. Robert Hale LONDON, April IS. The actur Robert Hale is dead. lie was the father of Sonnie and Binnie Hale. Robert Hale was born at Newton Abbot. Devon, in 1874. and was n son of Mr. Alexander Hale-Munro. He made his debut on the stage nl the Theatre Royal, Weymouth, in 1891. as Gerard Anslrutlier in "Mr. .Barnes of New York." and bis first appear.'ince in London at the Comedy Theatre a few mor,ths Inter ns Jack the Circus Clown in "HonpLa 1” In 1907 be joined the famous Gaiety Company, under George Edwnrdes. to play Albrecht in "9’llo Girls of Gottenbiirg." ami had the role of Slithers at the same theatre in “Our. Miss Gibbs.” In the pre-war revue "Everybody’s Doing It" he played the lead with great success. In the World War he served with the Inns of Court Officers’ Training Corps and also played in various shows. He was still on the stage a decade ago A brother is Captain Hale Munro, Kclburn. formerly chief wharfinger to the Wellington Harbour Board.
