SOUTHLAND NOTES

Dark Flight To Resume Training ALL BLOOD NOW AT INVERCARGILL Dominion Special Service. INVERCARGILL, April IS. Night Wings is almost certain to be installed a good favourite for the Otautau Cup on Saturday. _She won at the \ incent meeting with 7.13, and with 8.4 at the Otautau meeting she should be hard to beat. The going is likely to be holding. and as she is able to act well on heavy tracks, this will be a factor in her favour. Wild Career is the best handicap'ped horse in tlie field, as he meets Peony Rose, who finished second to him in the Riverton Cup. on exactly the same terms. The higher scale of weights is also against Peony Rose, but she will handle the conditions better than Wild Career. Mona's Song is another who is unable to handle heavy going, and this will prejudice her chance. The only chance Ashaway lias is if the truck is a quagmire, ami then lie will be up against it. Night Wings may get most opposition from Wild Career. Mr. M’. E. Hazlett has recommissioned the two hurdlers, Milford and Colonel French, and both look well after a good spell. Milford will be suited by the winter conditions, while Colonel French will only require to reproduce the fine hurdle form he showed as a three-year-old last term to make a great name for himself this winter. Ho has grown into a solid four-year-old. Mr. W. D. McLeod has purchased the hurdler All Blood, and he was schooled at Invercargill during the week, giving a first-class display. He is an eight-year-old gelding by Psychology from Bloodshed. by Solferino from Raid, and is a half-brother to Lordly Knight. He won a hurdle race at tlie Otaki-Maori meeting and has been placed on other occasions. Ocean Singer broke down during the week, and it is unlikely that an attempt will be made to train him further. His most important success was a Wyndham Cup, while he has also won over hurdles. Black Bard has been sold by Mr. E. C. Govan, and he has joined 11. E. McLellan’s team. His form earlier was of a high standard, but he did not carry on, and he is likely to be tried as a .hurdler. McLellan lias also taken up Cintilla with the intention of racing him over hurdles. Sailing Lady has shown that she is capable of running out a solid mile and a quarter, but her pulling habits have been against her in middle distance events. She is to revert to sprinting, and in a race of this class at tlie Otautau meeting on Saturday, she should be hard to beat. Boswell has caused some concern since he was placed back in work and he was recently given a course of salt-water treatment at. Riverton but with little apparent success-. The trouble appears to be in the shoulder and it has been decided to spell him again for a month. Heidelberg was suffering from a chill after the Riverton meeting and he has done very little on tlie tracks since. He has made a good recovery and he will again be given a solid preparation witli the idea of racing him at Canterbury meetings during tlie winter months. Rodeur has been leased by A. McKay and she will race in the same colours as Fleet Street. The Robespierre mare has failed to show any form ; this term, but she is now right at the bottom of the weights. Fleet Street is making good progress', and will be given a ruu at the Southland winter meeting. Frenchy has recovered from the injuries he received in schooling before the Riverton meeting. The trouble was not serious and lie has been kept in regular exercise with a view to racing him at coming meetings. Gusto, who had to miss Riverton, is to reappear at the Otautau meeting. He has been working in his best style and should be hard to beat. Waitoru has carried on the right way since his treble success at Riverton and his next start will be at Otautau, where he will contest the sprint event. His ability to handle heavy tracks to advantage makes him a great winter prospect, but he is now well up in the weights at local meetings. Spanish Lad and Nigger Boy have been kept in steady exercise at Riverton. Nigger Boy is to be raced at the Southland winter meeting, and he appears to be appreciating the holding tracks. Spanish Lad will not be asked to race till the Dunedin winter meeting. Dark Flight, has been hacked about for some time, and it is expected that he will be put into work again. He looks well after his spell. Mr. D. M. Tweedie lias a yearling sister to Dark Flight and Gold Flight, and she will race as Gay Flight. ■She has been doing light work for' some time and is a well-developed youngster. Ballybrit has doift) well since his Great Western success, but it is not intended to race him again till the Dunedin meeting in June, while it is likely that he will continue on to Trentham.

Trisox, who pulled up badly after running second in the Great Western, is apparently sound again. He has not been entered for local meetings anfl providing he stands up to work he will be taken to Trentham in July, with a view to contesting the Wellington Steeplechase.
