Sent To Jail For Two
Weeks
"I am afraid I cininot overlook this.” said Mr. Stout. S.M.. in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, when imposing a sentence of 1-1 days’ jail with hard labour on Ronald Keith Smith, charged with assaulting his mother, Ethel May Smith. ■ Mr. G. Mellish appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty. Sub-luspector E. 'J’. C. Turner, who prosecuted, said accused went to his mother’s home under the inlluence of liquor and used bad language. When she slapped his face he assaulted her. Iler injuries included two black eyes.
Mr. Mellish submitted that the case was an unfortunate one. Accused’s brother had taken a hand in tlie argument, and accused struck back, but his mother got in the way. After the occurrence accused was very contrite, and his mother, realizing that It was an accident, wtrs anxious that the case should be dropped. A sister had sent for the police.
