DORSET HORN SHEEP
Stud Dispersal Sale Que of the very top Dorset Horn studs iu Australia was dispersed last mouth, the “Myuua” Stud of Mr. T. S. Austin, who offered 90 of the flock, consequent upon his appointment to the management of “Wanganella,” a great Merino stud. “Stock aud Laud” reports the sale: — “The attendance was exceptional, including some 300 breeders and buyers from New Zealand, New South Wales and Western Australia, with a very strong representation from South Australia and all over Victoria, showing the great popularity of, and strong demand for, Dorset Horns at present. “Bidding was very keen throughout the sale, and the whole offering of nearly 300 lots was sold before 3 p.m., every sheep being sold tinder the hammer. The 623 sheep, including the very old ewes, averaged £7/6/9. This was the largest sale of one flock of any of the British breeds in Australia siucc Mr. Frank Syme’s sale of 1000 Romneys at Dairy on the Upper Yarra in 1916, which averaged just a fraction over £7. “Details are:—123 of 193 S drop made from 7 to 174gns., and 5 from 6 to GJgns.; 39 of 1937 drop from 7 to lOgus.; 54 of 1936 drop from 6 to lOJgns.; 46 of 1935 drop from 5 to 27gnu.; 20 of 1934 drop from 5| to lOlgns.; 42 of 1933 drop from 4J to llgns. ;’56 of 1932 drop from 4 to "jgus.; 24 of 1931 drop from 3to 4i|gus.; 27 sound mouths, mixed ages, from 4 to 7jgns.; 32 broken mouths, very old, from 24 to sgns.; 119 ewe lambs from 5 to 10:j gns., and 16 rams from SI to 20gns. The whole yarding of 623 sheep averaged £7/6/9.” Among the purchasers are McCarthy Bros., Hastings, New Zealand.
