Heads Of Government Departments EXHIBITION GATHERING In recognition of the part they had played in helping the Exhibition the heads of Government departments were entertained by the directors of the Exhibition on Saturday night. Mr. F. Johnson was official host and other directors present were Messrs. C. Todd, deputy-chairman, F. Campbell, W. McEay and B. 11. Nimmo. Mr. C. I’. Huinsworth, general manager of the Exhibition, and Mr. 11. E. Avery, secrotary and assistant-manager were also present. The guests included Messrs. L. B. Campbell, B. C. Ashwin, Owen Campbell, A. K. Entrlcau, W. Beuzies, J. M. Park, D. J. Cummings, E. V. Paul, J. G. Young, D. Adams, B. Casey, C. Collins, B. L. Dullard and L. J. Schmitt.
Welcoming the guests, Air. Johnson said that the directors recognized that without the invaluable assistance of the heads of Government departments the Exbibiton would have been much more difficult to carry on. The directors appreciated what had been done and it was surprising how many Government Departments were associated in one way or another with the running , of the Exhibition. The Treasury Department had provided the money; the Crown Law Office had prepared the Centennial Act, viewed the memorandum and articles of association of the company and given legal assistance; the Customs Department had been most helpful in concessions of duty, Air. J. 1. Bridgman, the Exhibition Customs ofilicer, being of great assistance; the Education Department had granted the use of the old Newtown School buildings as a hostel and had arranged, for school parties to visit the Exhibition, the Tourist Department had arranged special advertising and special films, the Income Tax Department had been helpful; the Industries and Commerce Department had given general co-operation and supervision of the Government Court; the Internal Affairs Department had agreed to Air. Heenan joining ‘lie directorate and had also arranged for distinguished visitors to come to the Exhibition; the Labour Department had been helpful in allowing the relaxation of certain awards; the Police , Department and the National Broadcasting Service had been of great assistance; the Native Department had arranged for the Maori concerts; the post and Telegraph Department attended to the telegraph and postal facilities; the Prime Minister’s Department had arranged for exhibits from the Queen and the Boyal household; the Public Service Commissioner had made the staff available for the Government Court; the Public Works Department had lent tractors for levelling the site; the Bailways Department bad granted freight rebates on exhibits and had arranged excursions;, and the Stamp Duties Department had agreed to a rebate of company stamp duty. Air. Johnson paid a tribute to the .running of the Government Court under Air. G. Sara and said that various Government departments in friendly rivalry had staged an outstanding exhibit. Mr Todd thanked the heads of departments for theix. excellent work in futherance of the Exhibition. The Government, through its executive officers, had done a wonderful job, he said. , . , The Exhibition was a wonderful example of teamwork, said Air. F. Campbell, who paid a tribute to Air. Sara’s work as manager of the Government Court. The Government Court, he said, was a wonderful educational achievement and it was a pity that it would have to be torn down. In reply, Air. Casey, the newly-ap-pointed general manager of the Railways Department, said that his department wanted to do everything possible to help the Exhibition. From April 1, there would be reductions in railway fares similar to those in operation in February. Air. Ashwin, secretary to the Ireasury, congratulated the directors on the results that had been achieved in most difficult circumstances.
