Progress counting in the State election indicates that the United Australia Pat ty is likely to lose three seats, with" no change in Country Party representation and a Labour gain of two. Titus, though Labour with 23 seats is tlie largest party in the House, tlie present Country Party Government witli Labour support is certain to continue in office. Tlie Premier, Mr. Dunstan, however, is still confronted witli tlie problem which caused tlie election, as he lias failed to unseat any of the four rebel Country Party members, though Mr. A. E. Hocking, who sought to enter Parliament as leader of tlie rebels, was badly defeated. The state of the parties is likely to be: Country Party. 22: Labour. 23; United Australia Party, 15: Liberal Country Party. 1; Independents, 4. The United Australia Party number is now the lowest in history.
Two Communists lost their deposits. Two retiring woman members. Mesdames Brownbill (Labour) for Geelong and Weber (Independent) for Nunwading, were easily re-elected. Mrs. H. M. Jones, who challenged Colouel H. E. Cohen for Caulfield, failed.
