ENJOYABLE GATHERINGS
Centennial Hearing Week Ends Two enjoyable social gatherings terminated the centennial hearing week arranged by the Wellington branch of the League for the Hard of Hearing. On Saturday the delightful grounds surrounding the country home of Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Gibbs presented a gay scene, when members of the Wellington branch of the league and their friends picnicked in this ideal spot at Belmont. Swimming in the pool, amid the hydrangeas in full bloom, tramping through native bush and playing tenniquoit on rhe outdoor court provided activity and enjoyment for all. On .Sunday evening the film, “Alexander Graham Bell,” was screened in Ihe King's Theatre specially for members of the league. About 400 people attended, including members of the league and those interested in the movement. The league's group hearing aid was in use, and in addition the theatre management, had installed a loud speaker for use in the stalls downstairs. The film dealt with the inventor of the telephone. Bell, and his deaf wife, Mabel Hubbard, who helped to convince her husband of the “glorious* possibilities of speech reading for the deaf.”
