BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY PIANO GROUP

Th? first meeting of tin l British Music Society piano group for 1940 was held in Wellington recently. Miss V. Corliss. honorary organizer of the society, announced that Mr. T. J. Young, director of music al the Teachers' Training Col-1 lege, had agreed tn accept the leadership of the group. Miss Corliss introduced Mr. Young, who said that he very much appreciated, the lion, organizer's invitation for him to become leader. He felt that tile work was a responsibility, and one in which he was intensely interested. Mr. Young commented favourably upon the vetlr’s programme, which the group's committee hail arranged. He said it,covered a wide field of musical thought mid activity mid its various aspects promised special possibilities of stimulation mid interest in these present times, lie referred to the policy of the p'auo group's co-operation with the song mid string groups, stressing the advantage of this coordination in musie-mnkiiig. An interesting and varied programme followed. It consisted of :i chorale by Buch (tirrtiui'ed by Hummel), two chorales by Hmiff (arranged by _ RiiinmeD. three Chopin numbers. Study in C sharp minor. I'mitasie-Improimdu. mid Nocturne in F'shnrp major: Prelude, mid ' lo the Moon.” bv Swinstend. “Golliwogs Cakewalk.” bv Debussy. mid "Heseiitanz." bv McDowell. The players were Misses E. Walls. G. Johnston. T. I,ewin. L. Black. M. Fleming, D. Ball, and Mr. K. I’ictou.
