Expenditure To March 11 Totals £38,300 FIRST ECHELON GRANTS Up to March 11 expenditure by the National Patriotic Fund Board for tne benefit of the armed forces and -or general patriotic purposes totalled £3B 390/5/4. The receipts to t ,ic sall,e dav totalled £39,480/3/8. leaving a baianee of £1179/18/4. These returns were shown in a financial statement submitted to yesterday’s meeting ot tlie board in Wellington by its secretarytreasurer (Mr. G. A. Hayden) Die meeting was presided over by the Go\-ernor-Gcneral. Lord Galway. The sum of £1729/11/3 was spent on the provision of comforts for the members of the First Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who are now in the Middle East, and more than £2(10 has been expended in providing comforts for troops in New Zealand. In addition to this amount substantial grants have been made to the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army for the erection of the recreation huts at the camps in this country. Bv donations (general), GovernorGeneral’s appeal, £18.337/18/1; patriotic seal appeal, £8427/16/7: sick and wounded fund. £1748/3/2. Donations (special): Auckland I’.l’.C. —New Zealand Naval Division. £500; Marlborough F.p.C.—troops overseas, £10; T. 11. Lowry—Y.M.C.A. hut in France, £lO.OOO. Donations held in trust. £6B; internal affairs account, £7/5/10; contributions from provincial councils, £3Bl. Total, £39.480/3/8. Expenditure. To grants: Y.M.C.A.. £21,138/17/8; Salvation Army, £8453/0/7: Order of St. John and Red Cross, £l5OO. Comforts: 11.M.5. Raniillies, £159 0/3: troops in New Zealand, £222/2/9; sick and wounded, £5l/2/2 ; First Echelon. £1729/11/3; Air Force Relations, £6O/10/1: library service for troops. £2S/19/8: contingency fund overseas, £3000; wool for distribution, £543/4/6; military bands equipment, £705/7/3; travelling allowances and expenses, £2O/5/3; printing and stationery, £59 16/5; postage and telegrams, £4O 17/10: office requisites, £3/12/9; sundry expenses, £6/8/11: mechanical appliances, £67/S/-: stores depot, furniture, £10; Fighting Services Welfare Appeal (advance), £500; total, £38,300 5/4. Bank balance, £l4O/18/3; cash in hand, £39/0/1 : total balance, £1179 18/4.
The grant of £21,135/17/S to the Y.M.C.A. includes Mr. T. 11. Lowry’s handsome gift of £lO.OOO for the Y.M.C.A. base recreational hut overseas The total grant to the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army (£21,138/17/8 and £8453/0/7) includes the cost of the erection of recreation huts for these institutions, tlie expenditure under this head being more than £ll,OOO. Tlie board decided to make the Y.M.C.A. and the overseas gifts commissioner its only expending agents overseas for tin* provision of comforts and recreation facilities. Provision for the sick and. wounded is a separate and special responsibility, and this is under tlie care of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and tlie Red Cross Society.
