NEW ZEALANDER’S D.F.M.

How Award Was Earned LONDON, March 13. The New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr. Jordan, is shortly to present to Conporal C. B. G. Knight, Picton, the Distinguished Flying Medal, which he was recently awarded. He is the first member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force to be decorated since the outbreak of the war. The medal was awarded for skill, courage and coolness in the face of the enemy and under intense fire.. As wireless operator his maintenance of communications contributed to the success of an operation over the Schilling Roads and the Frisian Islands ou December 14. Corporal Knight is the son of Mrs. K. E. Knight, Otago Street, Pieton, aud is 27 years old. He was formerly a corporal in the Nelson-Marlborough Mounted Rifles. transferring to the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1937. Previously he was employed witli the Post and Telegraph Department at Seddon. In February, 1939, Corporal Knight was sent to the United Kingdom as a wireless operator, for service with the Wellington aircraft which were to have been flown to New Zealand. Then, together with other personnel of the Royal New Zealand Air Force who were in Britain, lie was lent to the Air Ministry for employment with the Royal Air Force.
