Work For Poor And Distressed The fundamental work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society was to visit the poor and distressed in their own homes and afford the families so visited necessary relief, said the annual report of the particular council of Wellington of the society. For the year ended December 01 last, 80S families were assisted, which involved 2267 visits 'by_ members; £2lBl was expended on relief; 890 grocery orders, and 020 fuel orders were issued, and 5079 articles of clothing distributed. Assistance was also given in other ways Another important work of the society was the visitation of hospitals, charitable institutions, and prisons. The visits totalled 783. and the expenditure on this ■work tot-ailed £3l*B, which was used for snipplying comforts, such as tobacco, cigarettes and fruit. . To assist its work for unmarried mothers, the society had .purchased a property which would be 'Used exclusively for the welfare of unmarried mothers and their babes. Sixty-nine applications on Ibplialf o.f onphan children of returned soldiers were made to the Hunter Soldiers’ Trust. The trustees granted £506 Io cover these applications, which benefited' 178 orphan children. 'rhe society's work among seamen was being maintained. The Catholic Sea- . .men's Institute at 22 Vivian-Street was now complete with, a social hall, offices, gymnasinrp, and a chapel. During the year 7?|3(5 seamen visited the institute. 'The memibers visited 81 ships anfi interviewed 1552 seamen.
