SALE OF HIDES
Supplies For Local And Export Markets EQUALIZATION ACCOUNT Committee To Supervise Scheme Regulations covering the sale, of hides to loca] and export markets were gazetted yesterday. Ihe Minister of Marketing, Mr. Nash, explained in an interview that they were designed to ensure that the local tanners secured their full supplies for domestic requirements at stabilized prices and at the same time to prevent undue dislocation of existing trading practice. The supervision of the sale of hides throughout the Dominion would now be the responsibility of a Hides Committee, the appointment of which was provided for in the regulations. The personnel of the Hides Committee was announced by the Minister as follows:
Mr. T. A. Duncan, chairman of the New Zealand Meat. Producers’ Board, who will represent both the board and the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation. Mr. S. L. Wright, president of the New Zealand Tanners’ Association. Mr. J. F. Carter, president of the New Zealand Master Butchers’ Association. Mr. A. A. Moore, president of the Live Stock Butchers’ Association. Mr. A. P. O’Shea, Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mr. J. P. Mac Kay, president of the North Island Freezing Companies’ Association, who will also represent the South Island Freezing Companies’ Association. Mr. IV. V. Cockayne, Director-General of Agriculture, will be members of the committee ex-officio. Alternative To Pooling. Mr. Nash recalled that he had announced ou February 15 that an alternative proposal to the Government pooling scheme had beeu presented to him by the president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and also by the hides exporters’ and freezing companies’ associations. It was maintained that this alternative method would give greater simplicity in working detail and, at the same time, ensure that the producer received the full market value for his hides at the time of purchase. “I agreed, on behalf of the Government. to give this proposal the fullest consideration aud, as a result, it has been, decided to put these proposals into operation till such time as it may be necessary to review the position once again,” said Mr. Nash. “In essence the regulations provide that local tanners will continue to draw their supplies from the usual sources at current market values, and will then claim the difference between the price so paid and the standard domestic price, which is included in- the regulations, from an equalization account administered by the committee. This fund will be built up by means of a levy payable by all exporters on hides at the time of shipment overseas. “I sincerely hope that the scheme will be successful in practical operation and prove satisfactory to all interests concerned in the hides industry.” MEETING OF COMMITTEE Appointment Of Chairman The first meeting of the Hides Committee established in accordance with the Hides Emergency Regulations was held yesterday, when the Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr. A.
