NO INTENTION OF RESIGNING

One War At A Time, Says Mr. Menzies (Received March 5, 11.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 5. Demands from Labour and Country Party members that, he resign following the Corio by-election were referred to by the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, in a speech to a farmers’ convention at Wangahattn today, when he gave a clear indication that he has no intention of resigning. Mr. Menzies said he was “far too busy in the great job of winning the war to listen to small boys throwing stones on Ihe roof.” There was still a disposition by too many people whose loyalty was unquestioned not to realize that there was a war on. Many still went about their normal business and to the races and cricket. They could do so in comfort because the seas of the world were ruled by the British Navy.

He would go on working in Australia till the people said they no longer wanted him, Mr. Menzies added, and said: “Till then, let us have one war at a time. Let us not dissipate our energies, but go forward in a united effort to win the war.” The Leader of the Federal Country Party, Mr. Cameron, is to meet the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, in Melbourne on Thursday to discuss the possibility of forming a composite Ministry. The Country Party has approved Mr. Cameron discussing an alliance with the United Australia Party. The “Sydney Morning Herald” says: “In spite of this decision the prospects of the two leaders reaching an arrangement. are .not bright. It is stated authoritatively that Mr. Cameron, in the light of the result of the Corio byelection, will take an niicompromisiug stand.”
