RICCARTON NOTES
Plans For Defaulter Dominion Special Service. ClH'RiliST'-OII'UUCH, March 5. As a large numlbcr of horses had raced at Motukiirata on Saturday, there was not. much fast work a.t Riccarton today. Conditions were very pJea«aut, and the inside of the trial grass was open tor galloping, and was in exieelleut order following rain on .Monday morning. Ike plough also provided good going. On the plough Great Swoop sprinted three f-urloiigs home iu 36 l-o, and his saiblenuites Shikari and Pleading recorded similar figures. Pleading, who ran a fair race at Motukarara, is to be taken to Trentham mainly for exercise. Wild Talk and- Scold covered seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. the former finishing in front. Wild Talk appears to be all right again, aud should once again race prominently at Trentham. Scold is atso to go north, and will probably be allowed to .fulfil her engagement, iu the St. Leger Stakew on the lii'st day. Capricious was given strong work over seven furlongs. She has done remarkably well of late, and ranks as one of the early fancies for the Great Autumn Handicap.' . . , Concertipitch strode over six rurlon.gs in 1.18 1-5. On the grass, Sovereign Lady was given a useful mile, running home the last hall in 51 2-5. Retrogression impressed by reeling off half a mile in the smart time of 4S 2-5. Density ran five furlongs without pursuing her usual rushing -tactics in 1.3 2-5, the last four in 49 2-5. St. Cloud raced herself out of hack company when she won at Motukarara on-Saturday. She was not nominated for Trantham. Otherwise she would have been eligible to have still raced in hack events there. This lilly will be useful later in Mprdtit races iu the south. Kilrobe. who has been held under lease by her trainer, H. Nurse, for some months past, will in future race in the name of her owner, Mr. L. li. C. Macfarltiue. who will race her in partnership with Nurse. Defaulter was examined by a veterinary surgeon yesterday, and in his opinion the horse, if given n light season at the stud, will overcome all of his ligament Ivomble. and may i-ome back thoroughly sound. This course is to be followed, and there is thus a possibility that Defaulter may be seen again under silk. Willie Win. ridden by his rrniner. was on the tracks today and yesterday, but was not worked. As lias been the ease previously with him,, his lameness, caused by galloping on the firm round affecting ills weak tendon, lias worn off. and lliere is I'verv chance ol’ his going to I rciitham for pis one engagement. the middle dis I'atiee liaiiilica h on the <eci>nd day.
