AUSTRALIA IN WAR
Huge Expenditure On Defence Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, March 5. In the lirst six months of the war Australia had committed itself to an expenditure equal to the amount spent in two years of the Great War, said Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, a former New Zealand Minister of Trade and Customs, who has returned to the Dominion after spending six months in Sydney. There was considerable activity in military, naval and air circles, but none of this was visible in the cities, when life was proceeding normally. The shops were fully stocked and were invariably crowded, money was moving freely and there was an air of great confidence. ‘‘ln industrial circles it. is believed that the war.will have the effect of swelling existing industries and starting new ones,” he said. Mr. Fisher expressed regret, that New Zealand money had no value at all in Sydney, except in one secondhand shorn where New Zealand pound notes were bought for 15/-. He ftdded that Australia was considering the imposition of import restrictions to conserve credits abroad for war purposes. It was expected that a decision would be made in a few days’ time.
