FIRE BRIGADE GIVES DISPLAY
Turn-Out From Central Station 300 VISITING FIREMEN PRESENT In the presence of 300 visiting firebrigadesmen, assembled in Wellington for their annual conference, the Wellington brigade gave a demonstration at. the Central Station yesterday afternoon. The demons'tr; tion took the form of an alarm and turn-out of all the nrachines bused at the Central Station. 'The wide road space opposite tlie station was closed to through motor traffic while the machines were moving in and out of the station, and a great numlier of brigadesnien and about 2000 of the public gathered to watch the display. At a signal the a larm bell rang, Ihe brigade>smen jumped into their tunics and helmets, and, in a matter of seconds, the doors Hew open, and tlie tire-fighting Heel., fully manned, emerged, and d'ashed down Wakefield Street, round Chaffers aud Herd Streets, to return to the station by way of Oriental Parade. It was a stirring ami spectacular display, which earned hearty applause from the visiting brigadesmen, many of whom timed the turn-out, while others were busy with their cameras, securing a lasting souvenir of the occasion. All were impressed by tlie smartness of the turnout. After the display the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea in the social hall of the Central Station by the Wellington Fire Board and brigade, the superintendent, Mr. C. A. Woolley, acting as host. The conference, at which 135 New Zealand brigades will be represented, begins this morning.
