COMPLAINTS AT DELAY
Erection Of New Lower Hutt Post Office
LATE DELIVERY OF MAIL
The delay in the erection of the new Lower Hutt post otlice was the subject of a discussion at last night’s meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, and it was decided that a deputation wait ou the Postmaster-General, Mr. Jones, asking for an explanation. Cr. W. C. Gregory said that no provision had been made for the increasing population. The men behind the eounler had no room and the public had no room. It was not fair to either. To the chamber of commerce Mr. Nash had replied that tenders would be called at the beginning of the year, but so far there was no sign of them. The delay in receiving morning mail in some parts of the borough was referred to by Cr. Gregory, who said that in Totara Crescent and Victoria Crescent morning mail was not received till 11 o’clock. It was ridiculous that it two letters were posted in 'Wellington, one to Pongaroa and. the other to Lower Hutt, the Pougaroa letter would be delievcred first. Cr. Gregory, who suggested that Mr. Nash, as M.P. for the district, should be asked to introduce a deputation to the Post-master-General, said that the whole system at the Lower Hutt Post Ofiiee needed looking into. The mayor, Mr. Andrews, said he thought that there was ground for complaint about the posting of letters in Wellington and their delivery in Lower Hutt. A business man had told him that he received a reply from Auckland more quickly than from Lower Hutt. Conditions at the post office were not satisfactory when people had to wait four and five deep. The issue of petrot licences was a nightmare because of the inadequacy of the facilities. The stac was second to none, but the facilities were not equal to the job.
