ANOTHER EXPLOSION UNDER TRAM
Third Within A Week
CORNER OF CUBA AND WEBB STREETS Another explosion—the third within a few days—’beneath the wheels of a ■Wellington traincar, occurred shortly before 9 o’clock last night. The tramcar, which was leaving the city for the Exhibition, was turning from Cuba Ctreet into Webb Street when there was a loud explosion from under the leading wheels. Passengers and residents of the locality were alarmed by the noise. The tram was brought to a stop by the motorman within a few yards. An investigation revealed no damage and nobody was hurt.
From the character of the explosion the tramway authorities believe that it wits caused by a detonator maliciously placed on the line. Detectives are investigating. The first explosion, which severely damaged a tramcar in Berhumpore last Wednesday night, is still the subject of police inquiry. It is understood that a considerable amount of evidence has been collected. After the explosion a quantity of residue in the form of a powder was obtained from the track, and this is being chemically analysed. The police are believed to have taken a number of statements from persons who may be able to throw some light on the occurrence-
The second explosion occurred in Vivian Street on Thursday morning. No damage was done, and it is thought that it was caused by a detonator.
