OPENS FEND Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N„ February 10. An appeal to citizens and business bouses for subscriptions to enable 1 almerstoti North school children who have not seen tlie Centennial Exhibition to visit Wellington is being made by the mayor of Palmerston North, Mr. Mansford. Mr. Mansford has beaded the list with a donation of £10; other contributors are Messrs \\ .G. Black and . Hopwood, who have each forwarded 1JInquiries made at the primary schools, said Mr. Mansford, showed that there were approximately GOO children ''‘’o had not seen the Exhibition. that could only, mean that: their parents or guardians were not in a position to atford the expense, and it would be a great pitv if that number of children in lalmerstou North, which was so near Wellington. were prevented from seeing the Exhibition. , . Everyone. he thought, who had seen the Exhibition would agree that it was the finest in New Zealand s history; it had a distinct educational value lor school children, and he would not like to think that, any of them were prevented from seeing it purely for financial reasons. ~ . Exceptional arrangements could he made with the Railways Department, under which a child could go to M ellington and back, and see the exhibit ion,including meals, for approximately (/-, said Mr. Mansford. To take the 6(H) children by special train would cost approximately £2OO. That might seem a fairly large sum, but if each citizen gave what he could afford it could. easily be done, and the pleasure given to the children would amply repay the contributors.
