WINTRY WEATHER

Egmont Club’s Summer Meeting ALGERIAN IN CUP Homily And Tahurangi Dead Heat Dominion Special Service. HAWEIIA, February 11. The Egmont summer meeting was concluded on Saturday in the most wintry conditions experienced by the club tor some time. The temperature was low, and heavy downpours fell throughout the day. Despite this the attendance was good, but the- heavy rain restricted bettin" many refraining from leaving shelter to stand in the totalizator queues. The course was very Jieavy, and slow times were recorded. . ■Homily and the outsider Taurangi deauheated in the Tonks Stakes, and Algerian, who started at a false price, won the Nolan Cup with most ridiculous ease. During the day the totalizator handled £19,427, a decrease of £3305/10/-. The turnover for the meeting was £3u,ilO 10/-, which was £0754 below last year’s. ' In the circumstances the financial result is good, and there is little doubt that but for the atrocious weather a highly successful gathering would have been experienced.

Hurdles to Student Prince.

The jumping in the Okaiawa. Hurdles was not very good. The favoiirite, Lady Jean, fell, and the winner, Student Prince, had a life after going half a mile. First Chapter and Bay Dawn made most of the- running, with First Chapter under considerable restraint. Student Prince moved up from the half-mile, and was first into the straight, going on for a very comfortable win over First Chapter. Race Boy. tired a long way from home, but battl'ed on into third place, a length behind First Chapter. Bay Dawn was a poor fourth, and the only other starter, Red Sun, was always a long way back. All The Way. Saxon Tor led almost, all the way in the Waimate Handicap, the open six. He reached the front in the first half furlong, and after that was not headed. Fiancee followed him closely to the straight, where Saxon Tor showed a tendency to run wide, but did not lose much ground. Fiancee was soon beaten off, but Liekem came with a fast run in the last furlong and, as Saxon Tor was easing up a little, only half a neck separated them at the judge’s line. Fiancee was a length away third, and Alunga was a moderate fourth. Ecstatic. Screen Star and 'Solaria ran poorly. Very Close Call. Silver Gift scored an end to end win in the Meremere Hack Handicap, but she was stopping very quickly at the finish and kept her nose in front only just long enough to get the decision i Kilometre lay second in the run to the straight, but did not finish on well, and the-two who menaced the leader were Ripple and Young

Charles, the former on the outer and the latter on the inner. The three crossed the line abreast, Silver Gift winning by n nose from Ripple with Young Charles another nose away. These three were well clear of the others, at the head ol whom was Kilometre. Young Charles finished better than anything else and bandies soft going well. Chief Lord and Royal Sign disliked the going and tired quickly. A Dead Heat.

Tahurangi brought off a first-class surprise when he dead-heated with Homily in the Tonks Stakes. In the rush for ■positions at the outset, Royal Star, Gady and Race Call were most prominent, but soon after entering the back stretch Armacourt moved up to the lead. Positions were changing rapidly, and at the half-mile Homily was in charge, with Play On, Armacourt, Gay Mimic, and Classform handy. Crossing the top Tahurangi moved up fast on the outside, and tackled Homily, while Classform also made a dab. Classform’s effort was brief, but Tahurangi gradually gathered Homily, ajid an exciting finish resulted in the paircrossing the line on equal terms. Classform was two lengths and a half away third, and Play On was a poor fourth. It is so long since Tahurangi has done anything of note that he was very poorly backed, but the public was pleased to see the perseverance of his owner rewarded. The favourite, Royal Star 11, ran badly, being one of the first horses beaten. Play On, Notium, and Gay Mimic were soundly defeated. Triple Crown’s First Win.

Triple Crown and Ringling staged a great finish in the Electric Handicap, a five-furlong event for two-year-olds and three-year-olds, and Triple Crown, well ridden by the apprentice Mudford, got the verdict very narrowly. Calliope and Sea Link made the early pace, but Ringling was always handy, and Triple Crown and Captain Gale were advancing approaching the straight. Triple Crown came on the outer and Ringling got a nice run through on the home turn. Ringling soon reached the front and remained there till very close to the judge’s line, when Mudford made a well-timed effort and won by half a head. Captain Gale was a moderate third, and Sea Link did best of the others. A newcomer in O'Gonelloe was always well back and Windsor Glow lagged a long way behind the field. Triple Crown showed speed at the Wellington meeting, but this was her first win.

Algerian Too Good.

The Nolan Cup was a poor contest. Algerian made the opposition look cheap, and the field was strung out in the run home. Algerian reached the front six furlongs from home and led down the back with his mouth open,. He was bowling along freely in front crossing the top. where Dainty Sheila, who had made a very fast move forward, drew up close to him. Others prominent were Vaalstar, Arabic, Amatory and Goldburn. Algerian drew right away in the straight'and won by six lengths from Dainty Sheila, who was a similar distance clear of the third horse Arabic. Goldburn was a poor fourth, and next were Amatory, Young Charles, Trench Law and Vaalstar. The winner is good and he paid a false price. Dainty Sheila ran another creditable race. Pearl of Asia was well placed five furlongs from home, but never became dangerous. Another who ran below expectations was Trench Law. Miss Clipper was prominent a while, but in the run along the back lost her position. ~ Solaria’s Surprise. Solaria, who had been beaten earlier in the day, was at a double figure price for the Normanby Handicap, which he won by half a head' in a desperate finish

with Tooley Street. Rollicker and Liberal’s Mint led for more than half a mile, when there was a general closing up. Solaria and Tooley Street led into the straight from Rustem, and in a hard finish Solaria lasted just long enough to wm. Rustem was a good third, and Winsome Lu fourth. Winsome Lu improved on her first day effort. Tooley Street might have won had he not made a fast run to the front when crossing the top. Hamlet ran very badly. Hollow Victory.

Veldette, Race Away, and Pretty Lass were well backed for the Inaba _ Hack Handicap, which Race Away won in hollow fashion. Once, the field turned for home Race Away drew out and won as he liked by six lengths from Lu Chang, who was not strongly fancied aiid paid a good place dividend. Pretty Lass, prominent in the early running, weakened and finished a poor third, and Veldette was a disappointing fourth. Details Of The Kacing OKAIAWA HURDLES, of £150; second £2O. third £lO.
