HOPES FOR IMPROVED RELATIONS
British-American Talks
WASHINGTON, January 30. The Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, and the British Ambassador, Lord Lothian, conferred today. Afterward (Mr. Hull expressed hope for an improvement in Anglo-American relations. The conference touched on tlie British restriction on tobacco and contraband control. Lord Lothian, in ft statement, said that Britain was considering the establishment of a control point at St. John. It is learned that the British Empire lias shipped to the United States gold to the value of 890,000,000 dollars (£222,500,000) since tlie war began. Canada has sent. 550,000,000 dollars' worth, Britain 210,000,000 dollars, New Zealand and Australia 40,000,000 dollars India 30,000,000 dollars, South Africa and others 60,000,000 dollars. Britain has placed an order worth £4,500,000 for planes from the United States. Tlie Lockheed Air Corporation lias announced that tlie order is for 200 bombers of a new type, and spare parts. The machines are faster and larger than those previously bougtt by tlie British Government from the Lockheed Corporation.
