PEACE AIMS
League Of Nations Union Discussion ‘•.Mr. Fraser has said he has endorsed the views of Mr. Attlee in England. I thiidf something more than that is required.” said Mr. L. W. Holt (Auckland) during a discussion on peace aims at the annual conference of the New Zealand League of Nations Union in Lower Hutt yesterday. Mr. Holt moved the following remit: ‘‘That the New Zealand Government be urged to make public its own view ou peace aims; not to commit itself to any decisions on matters likely to affect the nature of the peace settlement. without giving adequate prior opportunities for public discussion: and generally to do all in its power to prevent, the making of secret agreements between the Powers on matters likely to affect the peace settlement.” “I think the New Zealand Government owes it to the world that it should come out with its own views on peace terms,” Mr. Holt. said. “Me must state in very definite terms where we stand. We are in a proper mess and we are not: going to get out of it without a pretty good show of courage.” Mr. Bloodworth. M.L.C. (Auckland) said whether or not the New Zealand Government had any peace aims he was not able to say. “I do not think the New Zealand Government is likely to do these things,” he said, “and 1 think it would be disastrous if it did. The peace aims must he the united peace aims of all the Allies.” After further discussion the following amendment was adopted in place of the remit: “Deprecating the making of secret agreements between the Allied Governments, this conference urges that publicity be given by lhe New Zealand Government to peace aims with a view to public discussions and an informed public opinion.”
In a further motion which was carried. the Government was urged to permit statements on international affairs from the YA stations by independent students of international affairs appointed by the Director of Broadcasting, subject to the general supervision of the censorship.
