Figures For Ten Months

INCREASE IN BEER DUTY .Decreases Under All Other Heads Net Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington last month shows a slight increase compared with January. 1930. This increase, however, is entirely due 'to the inclusion of approximate,y £BO.OOO from duty on motor-spirit at • n gallon, compared with under *oo,ooo from the same source in .January, I. Net. revenue for the month, excluding motor-spirit tax, is. therefore, some £45.000 below the figure for last January, lieturns from sales tax show a substantial' decrease, but revenue from motorspirit and from beer show very heavy 'llcreases. for the 10 months of the current financial year decreases are shown under all heads excepting beer duty. War tax in January amounts to £26 686. compared with £28,060 in December and £32,353 in November. The figures under all heads lor the 10 months of the current financial year compare as follows with those for the corresponding period of the previous financial year:— Ten Months.

shows a decrease of £175,178. Sales tax hits declined by £5900, motor-spirit tax is down by £13,4,22. and tyre tax by £10.412. Beer duty has increased by £111,898. Net Customs and War Tax. Net Customs revenue collected last month amounted to £284,746, compared with £279,059 in January, 1939. a decrease of £5687. War tax amounted to £26.686. This item appeared for the liryt lime in October last, and is made up of the special war taxes imposed tn the Customs Amendment Act. 1939, the proceeds of which go direct to the war chest. Sales Tax and Beer Duty. Collections of sales tax in Wellington last month amounted to £102,792, compared with £122.722 in January, 1939. a decrease of £19.930. This tax came into force on February 10. 1933, and Lie amount so far collected in Wellington totals £7,151.278. Beer duty collections last montri amounted to £ll,lBl. compared with £6589 in January. 1939. an increase of. £4598. Motor Spirit and Tyre Tax. The duty collected on motor-spirit in Wellington last, month totalled £59,087 at 6d. a gallon, compared with £43.564 m January, 1939. an increase of £15,523. The amounts collected at Sd. a gallon last month and -Id. a gallon in January, 1939. are included in the net Customs revenue given above, being paid into the Consolidated Fund and not taken out separately. Collections of tyre tax last _ month totalled £1502. compared witli _£s()2o in January. 1939. a decrease of £3518.
