Time To Face Realities
Sir,—“Bristolian” in Monday’s “Dominion” contrasts the conditions in Europe with life in New Zealand and its never-ending pursuit of pleasure and sport. ' . , , With our 40-hour week to indulge in pleasure and leisure the majority of New Zealanders seem to ignore the future of menacing possibilities. If the Allies are defeated then the rule of brute force will supplant the democratic freedom we now possess. Pleasure and leisure will not maintain production, a fact which is recognized by other parts of the British Commonwealth and their gallant Allies, the French. The criticism by “Bristolian is an expression of the present freedom we enjoy and unquestionably the kind which is justifiable and necessary—even if it hurts. Entertainment and recreation are necessary in war time more particularly for those who are passing through times of anxiety and strain. Unfortunately the desire for pleasure is much more in evidence in this Dominion than the desire to look cold facts in the face. It is surely better to wake up and meet danger than to wait for it. —I am, etc., T.A.F. Wellington, January 23.
