PAHIATUA MEETING

Big Surprise In Main Event GAY MIMIC REWARDED Miss Leighton Takes The Maiden Race Dominion Special Service PAHIATUA, January 26. Kain on Thursday and a torrential downpour ou Friday morning until just before the races began interfered but slightly with the track for the first day of the Pahiatua Racing Club's annual fixture, which opened today. The track was in very good order and did not cut up. The attendance was good in the circumstances. as also was the totalizator turnover of £7501. This compared with £10.288/10/- on tjie first day last year. Apart from the Pahiatua Cup, the main event, which provided a big surprise, the public fancies were in the money all day. Gay Mimic’s consistency this season was well rewarded .by’ a convincing win in the Pahiatua Cup. Miss Leighon won the Maiden Race pointlessly, but the strong favourite, Moradabad, was unlucky to miss the jump out and did not find his feet until the field had gone a furlong. He also had the outside draw. Miss Leighon went away fast from the inside anyl made the early pace until Daregain took up the running half a mile from home. Daregain led injo the straight from Miss Leighon. Miss Leighon was never challenged. Moradabad was finishing on second, well clear of Master Solway, with Balgowlah, Fauvette, Daregain, and Kinkajou next, in tha.t order. Moradabad should do better.

Thrill in Koniui Hack.

The public received a thrill in the Konini Hack when the very warm favourite Sky Limit, the Trentham winner, was run to a short head by the second favourite Colibri when Burgess appeared to have the race very safe. Colibri is very , well and finished strongly. Sky Limit appeared to have something in reserve. He was prominent in the early running but was chopped back to last half a mile from home. Titter improved to stick on well for third, with the rest well beaten. Te Oreko, Toorak and Big Wave made most of the pace, while Colibri was always handy. Colibri ran to the front from Toorak and Big Wave into the straight and Sky Limit came round the field on the turn to be fourth turning for home, and he was in front 100 yards from the post, with Colibri well clear of the others.

Ballance Highweight.

Thrasos, the pronounced favourite for the Ballance Highweight, was always at the back of the six runners in the early stages. It was'too hard a task, and Small Boy, after Thrasos had his head in front 100 yards from the post, came again to win by half a neck going away. Small Boy was always with the leaders and Primak and Debham were the other, two . to make the running to the straight. Thrasos improved his position round the turn, where Lacan also put in some solid work and was sticking on at the finish for fourth. The winner won impressively. .Thrasos was never balanced properly. A Big Upset. The principal race of the day , provided a big upset when Gay Mimic, who had remarkably consistent form on the East Coast, 10 placings in consecutive starts, won well from the rank outsider, Le Toquet. These two had the finish to themselves after the red hot favourite, Galteemore, ridden by L. J. Ellis, failed over the last furlong. Gay Mimic was always in a good position, being never further back than second. Le Toquet came from the back in the long straight. Corroboree and Tidewaiter finished almost in line for the minor placings. Granvale was right up fifth, and then came Galteemore, who was done with after being second to the turn for home. Tidewaiter made up a lot of ground in the run home. Granvale was well enough placed early but was never a possibility with the leading division. Hunting Cat was tailing the field a mile from home. Army Girl’s Win. Army Girl, a full-brother to the first winner. Miss Leighon, romped away from a weak five-horse field in the Nursery Handicap. Nationalist made some sort of a race of it but was easily beaten. Lady Govern just held off Lancelot in. a close finish for third. Hamua Hack. Trench Law, one of the warmest favourites of the day, was always pocketed on the rails) well back in the running of the Hamua Hack, and when Ellis got him out in the straight there was no chance of catching Dainty Sheila, who had always been one of the two leaders and who won going away. Acrobat, one of the leaders in the straight, was a fair third, while Joe Louis, who was last early, was fourth. Richeiieu Pearl was next after being third into the straight behind Acrobat and Dainty Sheila. War Cloud, a strong fancy, always tailed the field. Te Ore Beats Favourite. Te Ore beat the favourite, Dunmanway, in a fighting finish in the Makuri Hack Handicap. Stella Lux, on the outside at the barrier and always well back, outstayed the main bunch in the straight for third, with Punarua fourth. Then came Debretts and Wakarara. The early leaders were Gaelic Song, Wakarara, Debretts, Dunmanway. with Piinjirun. Gay Artist and To Ore in the next bunch. Wakarara led into the straight from Debretts. with Te Orc and Keliua next, and Dunmanway doing best of the rest. Stella Lux appeared with a great run from the back. Dunmanway and Stella Lux should improve. The Open Sprint.

Solaria was always one of the pacemakers in the open sprint and, after following Life Guard into the straight, drew away to win well. Royal Star II was the unlucky runner, having to be cheeked in the straight. He then went on to fight off Sporting Gift, who ran about in the run home. Lord Cavendish had to come with a sustained run round the bend into the straight to get anywhere near the leaders. Life Guard made the early pace but weakened in the straight.
