ADAPTING DEMOCRACY

“Democracy Up To Date,” by Sir Stafford Cripps (London: Allen’and Unwin, Ltd.). This interesting book by one of the outstanding figures in the British Labour movement set out to explain the defects in our democratic system, and suggests new methods by which our democracy could be adapted to the very rapidly' changing economic and political circumstances in which it has to operate. The writer tackles his work in two parts, the problem and the solution. In an informative foreword he freely states that, he does not suggest that the reforms which he proposes would solve completely’ the problems of the day, or would make certain that our democratic liberties can be retained. “I am convinced, however,” he says, “that unless we reform our methods we shall find ourselves quite unable to preserve those elements of democratic freedom that have been won by the most heroic struggles in the past, and equally incapable of advancing to that fuller share of economic liberty which alone can form the basis for a permanently free and peaceful society.”
