Seen As Prelude To Smashing Blow

Mr. Hallett Abend, Shanghai correspondent of the “New York Times,” says the Japanese army spokesman described the invasion of the Chekiang Province as a mere prelude to a smashing blow designed to rid the Shanghai, Hangchow and Lake Taihu areas of anti-Japanese elements and safeguard law and order on the eve of the establishment of Mr. Wang Ching-wei’s Government. He claimed that troops had already crossed the Chientang River and captured the city of Siaoshan. a Chinese base.
