CROWDED HARBOUR

New Zealand Centennial Yachting Regatta

MORE THAN 170 BOATS TAKE PART Brilliant sunshine, a light north-west-erlv breeze and smooth water favoured tlie fli'sl day of the New Zealand Centennial yachting regatta on Wellington Harbour on Saturday. More Hum 170 boats, some of which .had competed in Hie national sailing championships earlier in the week, took part and the regatta was on a scale never previously attempted in Wellington. Tlie centennial championship events attracted large entries and no fewer than 40 boats took part in the Idle Along contest, which was won brilliantly by Luana (-Canterbury). with Rose Marie (Bay o [ Plenty) less than a minute behind. Damfino 11 (Wellington) sailed into third position, just over two minutes later. Tlie Idle Along handicap event, for which there were 3G entries, was won by Unique (Wellington), with Damfino II second. Considerable interest was taken in the Auckland 18-footers and 12-foot Silver Fern boats, of which there are none in Wellington. In all, 24 boats and their crews representing a number of classes, were from Auckland. The two most thrilling races of the day were probably the championship and handicap events for 18-footers.. , . . . ~ Because their skippers gained the wron" impression as to the course they were "to follow, four Auckland boats, Limerick, Maramaru, Tiare and Jeanette were not placed in the championship event for 18-footers. These boats sailed the wrong course and finished first, second, third and fourth respectively. Manene and Aquila (Auckland), and Marlene (Lyttelton) were subsequently announced as first, second and third boats. No protest was made, and when they realized their error the Auckland skippers sportingly withdrew from the contest. The handicap event for this class n-as sailed without any hitch occurring and was won by Marlene, with Limerick second and Maramaru third Though the honours were evenly distributed among visiting boats, Wellington was prominent in championship events and won the titles for 14-footers and Takapuna class boats. Thistle (Tauranga) had an easy win from MC (Nelson) in the Tauranga class championship. G. C. Dickson’s Gypsy (Bluff), a com? petitor in the recent ocean race from Lyttelton to Wellington, won the B class handicap for keel yachts after a good race.

At times more than 170 boats were racing on the harbour. They made a most impressive spectacle and one that has not previously been seen on Wellington harbour. The regatta will be continued this morning and will conclude this afternoon with an all-comers race from Clyde Quay Wharf to Petone. It is expected that more than 100 yachts of all classes will take part.

Races on Saturday started and finished from Clyde Quay Wharf. The larger eraft sailed on the inverted A’ course from tlie start to tlie Coromandel buoy off Kaiwarra, to buoys in Evans Bay, and back the same way. Tlie smaller boats raced to Evans Bay and back via tlie Coromandel buoy. Because of the northerly wind, speedboat events which were to have been held in Oriental Bay were held in Evans Bay on Saturday, but if the wind is southerly today the speedboats will continue their regatta programme in Oriental Bay.
