Conditions From The Atlantic To Asia
BLIZZARD DANGER
(Received January 18. 9.15 p.m.) LONDON, January 17.
Terrible winter conditions continue in all countries from the Atlantic to Asia. The death-roll lengthens daily. Viborg (South Finland) today had a temperature of 86> degrees below freezing point (Fahr.), East Norway 86 and Moscow 79 degrees below zero, which is the lowest ever recorded.
Denmark’s ice-breakers are fighting a losing battle. Ice is covering the sounds and the Great Belt, and two miles from the coast in the North Sea. It is likely also to cut off the Baltic Sea even for the biggest ships.
Danish farmers are making clothes for their cattle from sacking in a pathetic attempt to defeat the blizzards. The Danube is frozen from bank to bank, imprisoning now a total of 1200 ships, including 200 tankers and 400 grain ships. Thousands of these ships are eti route to Germany. Residents of Berlin are shivering as they are still severely rationed for coal despite the air force lending 250 lorries to assist in its distribution. Hundreds of cars throughout Europe are stranded with frozen batteries.
