STERNCHASE’S WIN
Strong Finish On Rails
In Sprint ARVAKUR WELL BACK Auckland Form Astray The lightweight Sternchase finished well on the liiside to win the Telegraph Handicap from Black Thread, Duncannon, Brunhild and Blonde Princess in a blanket fihish. Sternchase was always handy on the rails in behind the leading bunch, which comprised Night Eruption, Black Thread, Olympus and Disdain. Night Eruption and Black Thread were in front at the last furlong where Sternchase got his opening on the rails and he was too strong in the finish for Black Thread, who just headed Duncannon. Duncannon tried to get up on the inner on the same track as Sternchase while Brunhild was further out on the track. Night Eruption was not quite equal to the class at. the finish but was well up fifth just ahead of Rakahanga, who foil after passing the post. Arvakur began well from the extreme outside but ran off the course entering the straight, while Bronweil was never sighted. Disdain, Olympus and Alunga, prominent early, failed to run on, while Spanish Lad was sighted only in the first couple of furlongs. Amigo was another who was never in the picture. Sternchase was bred by his owner Mr. G. D. Beatsou, of Hastings, who won two successive Telegraph Handicaps with .Statuette, the first one being a big surprise. Sternchase showed excellent form at Trentham in the spring but failed unaccountably at the New Zealand Cup meeting. However, he returned to the Winning list, at Hastings at the New Year. A feature of the race was the failure of the Auckland sprint form to materialize.
